What is Swell Aquarium Activated Carbon Media? This carbon is made from plant sources, mainly coconut shells, using a high-temperature gas oven to turn it into powder. The powder is then compressed into small, high-performing granules that are 3mm to 5mm in size. It is also a great micro-filter medium because of its structural pores. This carbon is suitable for use in freshwater and marine aquariums. What are the benefits of this media? Remove chlorine when you use tap water to set up a new aquarium. Remove odours that are produced by the decomposition of organic matter, such as faeces and waste feed. Remove yellow water colouration that is caused by phenols produced by bacteria in the filter, or by tannic acid released from peat root decorations. Remove residual or excess chemical treatments used on fish. Eliminate heavy metals, such as iron, lead, and copper, that may be present in the water.
